The Atayal typifies a patriarchal society in which the man is traditionally the head of the household whereas the woman serves only as a helpmate. The core of the Atayal society are the two types of social organization collectively known as the "gaga", i.e. the "hunting group" and the "doctrine group". A Group of Chieftains portrays the contents of the Atayal hunting culture, which entails the close observation of the moral codes and taboos passed down by the ancestors. This group of chieftains share a common feature, which is the face tattoo. Although the face tattoo is worn by more than just the aboriginal peoples, it is indeed the most precious cultural feature of the Atayalians. The face tattoo serves as a symbol not only of the aesthetic values and personal statuses, but also of the relationships between man, nature and the universe. It is indeed of great religious significance to the Atayalian society.
