This piece expresses the message of excessive blessings for the new year. My printmaking works have characteristically featured thematic elements of the beautiful landscape of Lanyu, the Orchid Island of Taiwan and the culture of Yami people, who reside on the beautiful island. One of the most prominent features of Lanyu and Yami culture is the flying fish, which signifies excessive blessings. The bay is lined with Yami barbarian’s vessels and goats, and the boars can be seen strolling on the small lanes, which is a rare sight outside the Orchid Island. Although the year 2016 is the Year of the Monkey, this piece features a group of goats, which signify auspice in Chinese, to invoke ancestors’ blessings for the remaining days of the Year of the Goat.
