This video was shot in the Jin Wan Wan Shopping Mall in Taipei City. It centers on two Philippine women, Liang Mei-Lan and Emily Su, who married Taiwanese men more than a decade ago. Because they are married into different families with different backgrounds, they each are familiar with one different local language, Mandarin and Taiwanese. When I talked to Liang, I used three languages, Mandarin, Taiwanese and English. When I had a conversation with Su, who does not have a Taiwanese ID, I used only Mandarin and English. Because we often had to speak in non-native tongues during the interview, there were times when we couldn’t express ourselves properly. Sometimes we even misunderstood each other, let alone making bad pronunciations. At the end of our talks, I asked them to sing a Chinese song with me, hoping that we could transgress the language barriers and leave all the saddening cultural differences behind through singing.
