My work portrays the process of decomposition which, when observed and painted through the microscope, goes from filth to beauty. To see it in a completely different light, I have to undergo some transformation mentally myself, and I do this by committing myself to the lengthy process of laying down meticulous and deliberate brushstrokes. As I fully focus on the job in hand, what appears right before my eyes gradually changes from a disgusting cesspool of filth to something profoundly poetic and stunningly beautiful. I have been deeply inspired by Charles Baudelaire. In his poem Une Charogne (The Carcass), associates the bodies of dead animals with the idea of beauty, which the poet describes in his other poem, Hymn to Beauty, as something which “Tu sèmes au hasard la joie et les désastres, Et tu gouvernes tout et ne réponds de rien.” Anything can be beauty even if it was from the pits of Hell, so long as we are able to look at it from an unorthodox point of view.(Hsu Jui-Fu)
