This series depicts food which most often invokes a sense of happiness. The Breakfast series depicts various types of food most often consumed for breakfast, such as the fried egg, toast and bagel. The Desserts series depicts some of the most popular items of comfort food including crème brûlée, donuts, cake and ice cream. Through this piece, I try not only to create a dazzling visual feast, but more importantly, to reach beyond the visual and bring forth a soft, silky touch as well as a delightful, lasting fragrance. I never would have thought that what seemed the most relaxing hour of the day would become the main theme of art. Significantly enlarged in the painting, the various items of food are all painted in simple colors, allowing the flow of the water-based pigments to easily guide our attention to the simple and easily neglected moment of leisure relaxation. With the enlarged and colorful dessert being the main subject matter of the painting, the sweet sense of happiness seems to be wrapped up by layers and layers of colors, while the semi-transparent brush strokes convey the ensuing sense of loss and emptiness following the moment of enjoyment. In recent years my work has been mostly concerned with the occasional, trivial feeling inherent to our everyday life, with an emphasis on how such feeling and sensation is manifested in today's consumer culture. The dessert, which pleases our senses, represents the pleasure and enjoyment made possible by globalization. What we need to ask is: what are we left with, once the food has been consumed and the moment of the extravagant enjoyment finally comes to an end?(Wang Liang-yin)
