This piece explores how the individual users understand symbols and give them meaning. The symbols used here are mostly derived from animals, objects or architecture related to Taiwan from the period of the European Exploration to the present day. These include the official logo of the Dutch East India Company, the mikado pheasant as recorded by British zoological collector and ornithologist Walter Goodfellow (1866–1953) in 1906, the architectural model widely used in Taiwan by Chiang Kai-Shek's Chinese National Government, leading economic crops of Taiwan, national emblems of neighboring countries or Neo-colonial style architecture built by settlers and so forth. The designs of the coats for arms include traditional European family coats of arms, early-century Revolutionary Army rank insignia as well as the localized designs adopted by the post-colonial, newly independent states. This project encompasses a total of proposals, each of which is introduced in details in the audio-guided tour about its symbolic meaning. (Jao Chia-en)
