Circus is irresistible. It is mesmerizing because it offers a way to elude reality for an ever-lasting fantastical world. But us who are from the real world are content with being audience members. Although we want to run away from everyday life, not all of us really want to become circus staff. In The Circus of Den-Den-Ciao-Jean series, each of the circus staff has a special talent and is dependent on one another. These petite people can’t fit in to reality and thus can only survive in fantasy. They make a living out of no-so-professional performances and struggle to position themselves between the real and the unreal. The cuddly characters symbolize our wish to escape reality and our desire to love and be loved. The circus represents an alternative nostalgia in modern times and a Shangri-la in a new world.
