What I have been pursuing in recent years is to inject my own feelings into landscape paintings. The themed exhibition, Rocks in the Infinite Wildness (2000) exemplified my attempts to depict the physical appearance of things with abstract patterns of dots and lines and, in so doing, to show how creative freedom enables one to transcend physical limitations. In Rocks in the Wildness ‧ a Floating Island - Poetry without Words (2001), I reduced the quartych to album leaves to create an effect of poetry suite, with the brushstrokes embodying a myriad of feelings and emotion. The Landscapes of Taiwan ‧ Steep Rocks is one of the pieces from the series, Rocks in the Wildness ‧ a Floating Island - Poetry without Words. I tried, on the one hand, to make this painting a complete piece in its own right, and on the other hand, to combine it with other paintings to form the quartych. This quartych consists of four sub-themes: the landslide, the steep rocks, the crack valley, and the floating island. Whereas Steep Rocks depicted the physical devastation caused by the Chi-Chi earthquake, Taiwan on 21st September 1999, The Landscapes of Taiwan reflects my feelings of shock and sadness at witnessing such a heart-wrenching sight.
